The Development of Larry Love Lyrics over the years
Being a lover doesn’t mean not being a fighter and bravery in love doesn’t always mean shouting it out from the rooftops. Sometimes we can fight for love in ways that can be overlooked and sometimes expressing ourselves through art can be braver than saying I love you, him or them out loud.
Over the years Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles have written many, many songs, but have you ever listened to the songs they’ve written and released, or some even of the unreleased ones? Their lyrics in the words they share often tell of a long-term relationship facing almost insurmountable odds and in fact even some of the songs they didn’t write on had these themes running through them.
Early songs co-written by Louis and the other One Direction boys like Same Mistakes talk of the unsteady ground of a relationship, which fits with later songs such as Too Young and Back to You. The songs show that there was unstable ground and those in the relationship struggled with what was being told to them, facing up to their outside responsibilities.
Steal My Girl which was co-written by Louis shows that he’s more than aware that everyone desires his person, but that his person belongs to him. This is reassuring and even with others trying to come between them, also mentioned in Strong, but they reassure the lover that they are loved and desired by their person. This is a theme that’s repeated persistently through Louis songs, all the way through to Home. Louis emphasises in Home that he’ll make wherever this person is feel at home as long as they are together.
These songs fit the notion that Louis caved to external pressure and ended his early relationship which he apologises for in Too Young. They also fit in with songs written by Harry Styles about a relationship such as Happily where Harry expresses that his lover wants to be with him and if they leave, they will be happier. Harry’s song’s talk of love and devotion to his person and this has been evident all through his discography.
Adore You, Love of my life, Sweet Creature and If I could fly all show in no uncertain terms that Harry is completely in love with the person who inspired these songs and it’s hard to believe that a lyricist as talented as Harry Styles hasn’t experienced the love of a partner over a longer period of time than what is presented to the general public via the media.
Harry’s songs talk of heartbreak and hurt too, like Falling and Two ghosts which appear to be linked since Harry used Two Ghosts to open for Falling during Love on Tour, but if you consider the lyrics of Two Ghosts, then it fits with the public narrative of being held apart from your love while being forced to see them every day.
Harry’s songs often talk of miscommunications, for example in Boyfriends, he speaks of being a fool for his lover and getting sucked in time and time again, where-as in Meet Me in The Hallway he states that they don’t talk, and this is also mentioned in Two Ghosts where there’s a lyric about telling old stories over and over again.
Both Harry’s and Louis’ songs while in One Direction were hopeful, yet sad and full of longing, but as they have grown as Solo artists their song writing skills have undoubtedly evolved, but so has the relationship each of them speaks off in the songs they write. While Harry is the king of metaphorical lyrics that can have many interpretations, Louis lyrics have always been more literal which explains both of their personas in the public eye perfectly.
Louis initially as a young man was bright, vibrant and vivacious, but always spoke his mind and to this day this is something the fans adore about Louis because even when he’s denying Larry or speaking of the One Direction boys it’s written all over his face (pun not intended) how deeply he loves the other members of one direction. Where-as Harry, well Harry is good at attempting to misdirect and talk around subjects, see Horse Noises when asked about Sweet Creature.
Both boys talk of this insanely challenging, yet complete adoration for their person and their songs, much like their tattoos, their friendship and their personalities complement each other. We have only seen the beginning of this evolution and while I’ve only touched on a few of their songs, the evolution of their story is clear if you listen to Harry’s House and Faith in The Future.
This evolution is evident, especially in songs like Lucky Again where Louis shares how he’s hard to lose, but harder to win over, but that his person has managed to accomplish that. This is also made clear Keep Driving where Harry takes them on a journey full of darkness hidden in the clouds and concern over what’s going on beneath the surface, but ultimately the love wins out and they keep going despite their worries.
Harry and Louis’ story according to their songs has been difficult, heart-breaking and at times more painful than anyone other than they can imagine, but they have endured and have grown with each other and in spite of gruelling schedules, homophobia and closeting, are still very much in love and devoted to each other.
They don’t need to publicly come out and say it, in fact they might never do that because the ones who know, already love them for who they are and support their relationship, but others remain wilfully ignorant which not only protects them from the rank homophobia, but also ensures that they get to keep their love secret and safe from prying, unwanted eyes.
Love is love and while it is only for the brave, it doesn’t necessarily mean sharing more of their story with us. They’ve given so much of themselves through their songs that if they chose to never publicly come out, we still have the story of their relationship in their own words, if we chose to look for it.
To both Harry and Louis, if you ever read this, thank you for being brave, for fighting back and sharing your love story with us. You inspire us to be brave and to love without restriction.
Take care of each other.
And remember we all love you for who you are as individuals, but we’ll always support you and continue to adore your music.
Thanks for reading.
